NEW YEAR

Theresa took a few minutes from her lunch break to stop at St. Lucys for some more practice at being contemplative. She tied the scarf on her head, genuflected and found a spot in her favorite pew on the back row. She never quite understood how her disgust with many things Vatican never dulled her senses enough to find another place to get her feelings sorted out. Today was particularly anxious for her knowing her son was taking a critical exam which could determine his entire collegiate future. She placed her hands on her crossed knee and giggled looking towards the altar which always prompted Maebe 's comment in Arrested Development about Where do I get one of those little T's to hang around my neck." "It's a cross." "Across from what?" . Maybe that enduring comedic moment is the REAL reason Theresa gets it all together in such a short few minutes in a busy urban neighborhood just about every time she comes here. But it's also Brad's encouragement. They talk at length about the things that worry her but Brad always stays upbeat when Theresa tells him she went to St. Lucys at lunch. Her sister and brother chide her having left the church years ago and barrage her incessantly about the pedophilia, the cover ups, the 'culture of life' crap and all things counter cultural but it always works for her and today's no exception. Walking back to the office, she grabs a soft pretzel from the stand and carefully gobs it with mustard being a little careful to not get splatters on her blouse. Turning into her cubicle she's disappointed that there's no message from Adam about his test. Oh well, the post-it on his picture on her board says it all - "Un-set your heart".
