NEW YEAR

It was one of those fantabulous summer mornings. The heat was apparent but not bonfire-like at all. The radio was playing a classic blues rift on a Hammond B-3 when Giles distinctly heard "Look to the east". He paused, wondering if it was coming from the little Sony on the table and he heard it again, "look to the east". It definitely came from the radio and he walked to the side yard and looked over the wall and there was a '59 Mercury parked in front of his neighbors driveway. It stood out not only because of its salmon and white two tone but because there was a red flyer on the windshield. Giles couldn't contain his curiosity so he walked out the back gate and over to the car. He lifted the windshield wiper and saw the words Hot Shoppe. There hasn't been a Hot Shoppe in 25 years and this flyer was describing the one on Hunting Park Ave - been gone since the 60s. Giles felt a little creeped out by this car, this flyer and the voice from the radio. Then he heard a garage door opening and there in the driveway was a woman dressed in the car hop outfit just like the ones worn by the Hot Shoppes' and he stood speechless as she approached. "Hi, do you recognize my car?" she asked. Giles thought this must be some prank, some candid camera stunt, but quickly replied "Still makin' those onion rings?" The woman introduced herself as Marie Carnes from Fishtown and solved the mystery of this all by explaining it was a reunion of sorts of former car hops from around the country and she came all the way from the east coast to take part in it. Her costume was a replica but the Merc was originally her Mom's which she had restored and transported here to add authenticity. Giles thanked her for taking the time to explain this all to him and wished her "good luck" as he headed back to his yard. As she pulled away in the car he wished he had thought to ask her Mom's name and when he sat down the guy on the radio said "that last number was a request from Carol Duffy from Fishtown". Oh Man! Carol Duffy was the name of the woman his Dad had a long affair with before Giles was born. Could it be possible?
