NEW YEAR

Eloise was in the middle of doing one of her not favorite things. She was mowing Mr. Ott's lawn, thanks to her Dad who "found" this job for her. It was summer of '88 and Eloise made the mistake of using the excuse "I'm Bored" to her Dad in hopes of changing his mind about her visiting Aunt Martha in Sebring. Not that she was so crazy about Aunt Martha but Lenny lived in Sebring, get the picture? Instead Dad jumped on the bored comment to say "Eloise, you need to get a project started or better yet, earn some spending money by finding some odd jobs around the neighborhood". Yikes. Before Eloise could pacify Dad by saying maybe I'll see if there's any babysittiing . . Dad quickly jumped in saying "you know Mr. Ott has asked me if I know of any boys who mow lawns because he's getting too frail to mow that tiny yard of his - you could do it and Mr. Ott will pay very well, I'm sure." Well, here we are and Eloise has to do this twice a week until school starts. She really hates all the bushes and plants and trees that she has to mow around and this high priced Honda mower is a touchy stinkin' thing with its auto-shutoff every two minutes. But Eloise endures and while putting the mower back in the shed, she notices a metal box next to the shelf where the gas can sits and she opens it to find some old pictures of soldiers and army trucks. Under them was a certificate, old and brown edged - it was an Honored Citizen Award signed by the Mayor of Sebring. Mr. Ott approached so Eloise quickly shut the box and pretended to adjust the gas can. As Mr. Ott handed Eloise the money to pay for her chore, she asked him, "Mr Ott, have you ever been to Sebring?" He sat down and told her this story of falling in love after returning for the war and starting a life in Sebring where he worked on the town council. It was a happy story until he got to the part where his wife left him for a baccarat dealer in Reno and he moved here to mend his broken heart. Eloise said she was sorry about getting dumped and he said don't fret because his wonderful son Lenny still lives there and he visits him frequently. Well no sense explaining, it was the same Lenny that Eloise has a crush on and the story closes with her and Mr. Ott driving away to Sebring in his Buick, Dad is OK because Mr. Ott is highly respected and you can figure out that Eloise and Lenny will be necking before the sun sets today.
