The whole notion of Gdansk as a refuge, a place to start over could have been a flub like some of Eddie's other ideas. But in just a short time Eddie practiced his Polska fervently via Rosetta Stone on his Xoom and went from daj me buziaka (gimme a kiss) and pocaluj mnie w dupe (kiss my ass) as his starters to a fairly rounded out vocabulary that got him around town with little trouble. He made friends the first day he strolled from his hostel in Old Town to discover Scruffy Murphy's pub down town, filled with locals and visitors many of whom spoke English. Eddie had an endless supply of Polish jokes that surprisingly got huge laughs from the pub crowd. Like: why don't Polish women use vibrators? ANS. Eddie's relationship included an encounter not unlike the one Dustin Hoffman represented in The Graduate when the guy said 'plastics". Eddie got wind of an emerging dot com enterprise and scraped up some dough when the IPO was announced and made a nice piece of change. This bankroll facilitated "Hi I'm Eddie and I'm talking to you from Gdansk". Oh, and did I mention Ariel Lubienska? She was one of the crowd in Scruffy's but, oh my, when you describe eastern European knockout, Ariel could be the picture. She jumped on the Eddie vibe immediately and the only impediment was Eddie's caution into making a Rula Lenska out of a Eleanor Chagoginski. Eddie had a crush on Eleanor only to find that her roots = wagon puller. Ariel was stunning and affable and was advanced in the art of encounter to lay back and wait for the right moment with Eddie. That right moment happened tonight in Goldwassers when Eddie was divining over a plate of nalesniki and caught in the corner of his eye Ariel's cowl neck peek at her beguiling cleavage,
