NEW YEAR

That leaves Charlie, Charles Boseda Chilton to be exact to fill in the last blank of our favorite four guys. Charlie is the son of a Baptist deacon whose grandfather was brought to America from the port of Lagos in Nigeria to work as a slave in Richmond VA. Charlie's mom was an alto in the choir who attracted Frederick Chilton's eye one hot Sunday and following a short courtship, they were married. Charlie was the only black kid in our elementary school but instead of isolating him, his personality and charm made everyone in the school latch on to him as a friend. If Facebook was around when Charlie was just a kid, there wouldn't be enough space on his page to list all his friends, swear. Charlie was among if not THE smartest kid in the class. He read Dick and Jane the very first time like he had that big book at home. He could spout out the multiplication tables like he was reading them and he won the spelling contest every year and twice won the geography contest competing against older schoolmates. But it was in high school where Charlie's messianic attributes really shined so bright. Jack Kelsey played on the football team and during the Newton game got hurt and was taken off the field in an ambulance. He injured his spinal cord and was paralyzed although only temporarily. Charlie became Jack's constant companion pushing him around in his wheelchair and constantly telling everyone that when Jack heals up, he and Charlie were going to take the Gentras to the state championship. Jack regained full use of his arms and legs but was deemed too high risk to play tight end, but he became a field goal kicker and a damn good one, too. Charlie's inspirational manner made him senior class president and his full scholarship to Gelbart made him the first in his family to attend college. Charlie's ambition was always backed by the drive to make it happen which makes it no surprise he found the Inner Cranial Cosmic Microwave Project and brought his buddies along for the thrill. The Reader's Digest used to feature My Most Unforgettable Character, the title of which always makes me think of Charlie. He is different, he is soulful, he is charming and he hasn't yet had his world intro. We haven't heard the last of Charlie Chilton.
