NEW YEAR

It was a unique path and route to the other neighborhood where I played with friends. I worked it out to be the most direct route even thought it required a bit of cutting through yards and an abandoned property. I started from my front porch, down the steps and along the inlaid brick walk my Dad put in. Out the gate and up the sidewalk past two houses and then along the driveway flanked by high hedges past the detached garage and then along a path that separated the back yards with a 10 high foot stone wall that was topped with an iron railing which ended the back yards of the properties along the street above mine. The wall could be easily climbed from a spot where there were enough protruding stones to hold on and place my foot so I could reach the top. Once there, I walked the other direction to an alley that divided the two properties on either side and took me to the street. I crossed the street and walked diagonally to a boulder strewn path that bordered the newest brick homes on one side and a large two story property on the other. At the top of the path were big rocks that I climbed over and reached another street. I walked along the sidewalk to a plant that manufactured ball bearings and I climbed over a small mountain of metal shavings along side of the building and reached the fourth street. Here's where it got a bit scary when it was dark - I had to climb a small retaining wall to an overgrown yard with fallen tress, large shrubs and weeds. It bordered what used to be a Catholic High School and an estate that was abandoned featuring a huge three story dwelling with windows broken, staircase partially shattered and high ceilings. It was even scary during sunlight so I usually just walked along side the building to the fifth street when I then found the sidewalk that was recently paved in front of a different row of a new brick houses. At the end of the street was a home for troubled children from broken homes. It was a large stone complex with a wing that bordered the street and was connected to the large main building. I walked along the driveway to the lawn adjacent to the main building down the sloping grass to a wall bordering the main highway.I jumped from the wall and waited for the cars to give me the opening to cross the street and walk along the upward leading sidewalk to the street which was an inclined hill at the top of which was the location of the bowling alley featuring eight, yes 8, lanes where my friends and I could bowl for 25 cents a game. I was a lousy bowler but maybe I was always too fagged out from the walk to get there.
